Rob Parton
Rob Parton is well known as a trumpet artist, performer, and bandleader, he is also active
within the academic side of higher education at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Parton was
appointed Associate Professor of Trumpet at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio since Fall of
2010. Prior to this position, Parton was a tenured Associate Professor of Jazz Studies and
Trumpet in Chicago. Parton is the Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz
Orchestra. He has held this position since fall of 2015.
Dr. Paul Schilf, Camp Director
He serves as Camp Director, instructs the Brass section, and grades 9-12 jazz band
ensembles. Dr. Schilf is an active guest conductor adjudicator and clinician throughout the
country.
Jim McKinney, Percussion/Rhythm Section
Mr. McKinney is the Former Director of Bands at South Dakota State University. During
camp, he will instruct the Rhythm section and grades 6-8 jazz band ensembles. He also plays the
drums for the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Jazz Diversity Project, which tours the state of South
Dakota.
Joel Shotwell, Woodwinds
Mr. Shotwell is an active saxophone player and educator will instruct the Woodwinds
section during JazzFest Jazz camp. He also plays the saxophone for the Sioux Falls Jazz and
Blues Jazz Diversity Project, which tours the state of South Dakota.
Rachael Kramer, Vocal
Ms. Kramer earned her degree in Vocal Music and K-12 Education from Augustana University in
2011. She is in her 5th year as a choral director at O’Gorman High School in Sioux Falls.
Ms. Kramer sang with the Northlanders Jazz Band at Augustana University under the direction of
Dr. Schilf.

tuition, which includes a $35 non-refundable deposit, will be applied to your camp tuition.
Full payment for tuition is due by June 26th
Cancellations made by June 26 will be refunded minus the $35 deposit and any credit card fees.
Upon receiving your application and tuition, Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues will send a confirmation
email acknowledging receipt of application. Application and enrollment imply agreement to abide
by all JazzFest Jazz Camp and the University of Sioux Falls rules and regulations.
Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Theory, History of Jazz, Combo Rehearsal, Big Band Rehearsal, Lessons,
Concerts, Master Classes, and evening concerts with faculty, guests, and students.
The final performance of the top band will take place on the Main Stage at JazzFest 2019 –
Saturday, July 20th for the top select big band! Campers will also get a backstage visit with
JazzFest artists and will be featured on South Dakota Public Broadcasting’s “Best of
JazzFest” TV show.
JC scholarship
All resident campers will receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sheets and towels in the
dormitories will be provided. Doors will be locked at 9 pm, for your child’s safety.
Resident Camper Commuter $375
Commuter Camper* $325
Early bird application deadline is May 1st
After May 2nd, tuition increases to $405 and $352 for Resident Camper and Commuter Camper
respectively. Tuition is the same for both instrumental and vocal campers.
Full payment for tuition is due by June 20th
If you are a Resident Camper and request a private room, there is an additional charge of $65
for the tuition. If this request is made AFTER June 19th, the cost increases to $126.
Tuition includes a camp t-shirt, lunch, and dinner, some fun evening activities, plus a JazzFest
pizza party!
*A commuter is a camper who is not sleeping on campus and does not eat breakfast.
All classes, lessons, and rehearsals will be held at the Jeschke Fine Arts Center on the campus
of the University of Sioux Falls. Campers will be housed in air-conditioned dormitories located
on the USF campus. Meals will be served in the Salsbury Dining Hall.
The Stewart Center may be used for recreational activities during your visit to campus. The
center features a basketball court and volleyball courts.
