Hank Harris – 6:00PM
Hank has
encompassed and assimilated a wide range of musical genres into his own distinct
style. His telling of the story behind each song creates an intimate, immediate
and relaxed atmosphere, honest and informal, genuine and vulnerable. All age
groups, in small concerts or large festival crowds, relate to his clear, sincere
and poetic lyrics and music.

Tweed Funk – 7:30PM
Formed in late 2010, Tweed Funk’s national ascent has been driven by their horn-fueled, Memphis flavored blues, roots, and soul. This Milwaukee, Wisconsin 6 piece soul-blues revue is fronted by Joseph “Smokey” Holman, who recorded under Curtis Mayfield in the early 70’s. Tweed Funk boasts 4 Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) Wins in the last 3 years for the band and its members.
Tweed Funk’s third CD, First Name Lucky, has launched the band to new heights: nominated for a 2014 Blues Blast Music Award in the Soul Blues Album category, reached #10 on the Roots Music Report Top 50 Blues Album Chart, and reached #11 on the Living Blues Chart.

Marcia Ball – 9:30PM
Marcia Ball, the
Texas-born, Louisiana-raised musical storyteller has earned worldwide fame for
her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time
she strolls onto the stage. Her groove-laden New Orleans boogie, deeply soulful
ballads and rollicking Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite
with music fans all over the world. In 2010, she was inducted into the Gulf
Coast Hall Of Fame and in 2012 into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. She’s
received a total of six Living Blues Awards and nine Blues Music Awards (and has
a whopping 42 nominations). She’s received five Grammy Award nominations,
including five of her six previous Alligator albums. Always a songwriter of
renown, Ball delved deeper into songwriting than she ever had in her career with
her Grammy-nominated 2010 Alligator release, Roadside Attractions,
creating one of her best and most personal albums.The title track of Marcia Ball’s new album, The Tattooed Lady And The Alligator Man, is an irresistible tale of true love at the travelling carnival. It’s a story that nobody but Ball could spin, filled with vivid details, universal truths, and a rambunctious sense of fun and desire. With raucous horns punctuating Ball’s legendary piano pounding and emotional, melodic vocals, the song kicks off the CD of eleven originals and one glorious cover (Hank Ballard’s He’s The One). The release mixes Ball’s Gulf Coast blues, New Orleans R&B, swampy Louisiana ballads, and jumping, Tex-Mex flavored zydeco into a one-of-a-kind musical gumbo, a sound she has been perfecting over the course of her legendary career.

Brian Masek & Friends – 6:00PM
The members
of Brian Masek & Friends are no strangers to JazzFest. Bassist Brian Masek
and guitar wizard Jesse Christen have each made prior appearances. Drummer Chuck
Case and sax player Chris Borchardt round out this high energy group and are on a
mission to cure your fear of jazz forever. They keep the audience on their toes
by performing unique arrangements of high energy jazz/funk/fusion tunes from
artists such as Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, Jeff Beck, Dave Weckl and others,
along with heavy hitting blues tunes from Jesse’s multiple solo releases. -
Harper & Midwest Kind – 7:00PM
An amalgamation of
blues, rock, soul and world music, multi award winning Australian singer/
songwriter “Peter D. Harper” creates a heady mix of roots music
through his creative use of the harmonica, and the haunting drone of the
didgeridoo. By combining traditional and modern influences, borrowing from
Western and World music, Harper has created a highly original take on the roots
genre which many have labeled “World Blues”. His innovative use of
electronic enhancement and feedback, breaks the traditional boundaries of the
harmonica, giving his music its distinctive harmonics and effects. The powerful
guitar sounds and the unique drone of the didgeridoo create raw yet eerie sonic
textures, somehow sounding primal and contemporary at the same time. Harper is
backed by his incredible Detroit based band “Midwest Kind”. -
Hadden Sayers – 8:30PM
For most musicians,
“the road” is a place of either hedonism or heartache. Contrasts on
the far ends of a far too common cliché. But for Soul-Blues Guitar Slinger Hadden
Sayers, the road is a comfortable buzz of underground fans and passionate shows.
Confident tunes from a mature, assured composer, the newest record, Rolling
Soul, features Sayers at his best. Heartfelt lyrics sung from deep inside
matched with innovative guitar work, recorded with the warmth and soul and depth
of the best vintage gear. It’s a record to contemplate and savor. -
MIDCONTINENT COMMUNICATIONS PRESENTS: Boz Scaggs – 10:00PM
Boz Scaggs is
an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. In the 1960s, Scaggs gained fame
as a guitarist and sometime lead singer with the Steve Miller Band. Additionally,
he had several solo Top 20 hit singles in the United States in the 1970s, which
included hits such as “Lowdown” and “Lido Shuffle” from
the critically acclaimed album Silk Degrees. Scaggs continues to write,
record music, and tour.Fans who have followed Boz Scaggs’ remarkable career dating back to the late Sixties will instantly recognize Scaggs’ characteristically deft touch as a singer. He brings a sly drawl, a conversational intimacy, and an elegant delicacy to his work. His soul is effortless and deeply felt, never making a show of itself, but unmistakably evident in every lyric he delivers.
You can hear a sense of fun, as well as the ability and willingness to wander in any musical direction throughout Scaggs’ newest album of A Fool to Care. The inspirational heart of those songs lies in the sounds of Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma that played such a vital role in shaping Scaggs’ musical sensibility. Ranging from the seductive New Orleans rumble of the title track to the wry social commentary of “Hell to Pay” and a heartbreakingly wistful interpretation of The Band’s “Whispering Pines.”
What ultimately communicates about A Fool to Care is how fully Boz Scaggs inhabits these songs. They seem less like interpretations than realizations, proves that when you truly make someone else’s song your own, you paradoxically restore something essential to it.

“Jazzed” with Bobby Gripp – Noon
“Jazzed” is a state of being – an anticipation of
something special unfolding as you’re witnessing it, in this case, in a musical
context. They will be playing compositions by artists such as Cole Porter, Miles
Davis, Herbie Hancock and a host of other jazz and blues classics and standards.
The members of “Jazzed” will bring their own unique approach to this music.
Drummer Bobby Gripp leads the group with Chris Champion on the guitar and Eddie
Dunn as the vocalist and bass player. Gripp has been a longtime supporter of the
Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society and has toured with the organization’s Jazz
Diversity Project.

JazzFest Jazz Camp with Allen Vizzutti – 1:30PM
The top band from JazzFest Jazz Camp will be joining Allen Vizzutti for a grand performance! Vizzutti has visited 40 countries and every state in the union to perform with a rainbow of artists and ensembles including Chick Corea, ‘Doc’ Severinsen, the NBC Tonight Show Band, Woody Herman, and many more! As Artist in Residence, Allen has taught at the Eastman School of Music, the Banff Center for the Performing Arts, Kansas State University, Ohio State University and more. He is currently Artist In Residency at the University of South Carolina.

Alicia Olatuja – 3:00PM
While the 2013
Presidential Inauguration ceremonies may have featured such A-list talent as
Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys, it’s the voice of a
classically trained mezzo-soprano who has drawn the most critical acclaim.Although musical theater and opera are two of Alicia’s passions, she also performs in a variety of other genres and has been creating quite a buzz in the jazz arena, receiving great praise from jazz giants such as Dianne Reeves and Monty Alexander. In addition to her solo career, Alicia regularly performs with her husband in their African jazz band, the Olatuja Project. Alicia recently released her solo debut album, Timeless, on which she is joined by 3-time Grammy-Award winner McBride, husband and bassist Michael Olatuja, pianists Jon Cowherd and Christian Sands, Grégoire Maret on harmonica, Ulysses Owens, Jr. on drums and David Rosenthal on guitar.

Slim Man – 4:30PM
Slim Man studied trumpet for the next 9
years, and also taught himself how to play piano and guitar. After studying
classical piano, composition and harmony at Peabody Institute of Music in
Baltimore, MD, Slim Man got signed as a songwriter for Motown Records. He had
songs recorded by the Temptations, Angela Bofill, and other artists. Slim Man
also recorded a CD for Motown, which gave birth to his signature style–a unique
blend of jazz, soul and pop.Slim Man debut CD End of the Rainbow was on many Top Ten lists for the year. Since that debut CD, Slim Man has released 11 CDs, his latest a collection of live recordings called Slim Man LIVE. Slim Man has also sung for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican on Christmas Day, 1999 and was nominated by the Canadian Jazz Awards for International Vocalist of the Year two years ago.

The Record Company – 6:00PM
In the short
span of 2 years, The Record Company (Los Angeles, CA) has gone
from recording in the bass player’s living room to playing with a diverse range
of music’s top acts including B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Charles Bradley, The Wood
Brothers, Social Distortion, and Robert Randolph. This rock/roots/blues trio has
been described by Time Out L.A. as if “John Lee Hooker and The Stooges had a
love-child”.Their music has been featured in over 25 commercial, film, and television placements including ads for Coors Light, Subaru, ABC’s “Nashville”, CBS’s “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and the theatrical trailer for “Last Vegas” starring Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline.

GALACTIC – 8:00PM
GALACTIC was
formed eighteen years ago in New Orleans, and they cut their teeth playing the
biggest party in America: Mardi Gras, when the town shuts down entirely to
celebrate. GALACTIC is a collaborative band with a unique format. It’s a stable
quintet that plays together with high musicianship. But though the band hasn’t
had a lead singer for years, neither is it purely an instrumental group. GALACTIC
is part of a diverse community of musicians, and in their own studio, with
Mercurio and Ellman producing, they have the luxury of experimenting. So on their
albums, they do something that’s unusual in rock but not so controversial an idea
in, say, hiphop: they create something that’s a little like a revue; a virtual
show featuring different vocalists (mostly from New Orleans) and instrumental
soloists each taking their turn on stage in the GALACTIC sound universe.To make Carnivale Electricos, the members of GALACTIC (Ben Ellman, harps and horns; Robert Mercurio, bass; Stanton Moore, drums and percussion; Jeff Raines, guitar; Rich Vogel, keyboards) draw on the skills, stamina, and funk they deploy in the all-night party of their annual Lundi Gras show that goes till sunrise and leads sleeplessly into Mardi Gras day. What pulls all the diverse artists on Carnivale Electricos together into a coherent album is that one way or another, it’s all funk. GALACTIC is, always was, and always will be a funk band.

MIDCONTINENT COMMUNICATIONS PRESENTS: Grace Potter – 10:00PM
Born in
Waitsfield, Vermont, Grace Potter grew up in a family that encouraged her
artistic pursuits in areas from music to theater, the latter of which she was
studying at St. Lawrence University when drummer Matt Burr heard her singing at
an open-mike night in 2002 and asked if she would form a band with him. She
declined, but when her high-school friend and bass player Courtright Beard
enrolled in their college, she reconsidered the invitation, and the three of them
began to write and perform jazz-influenced songs, Potter also taking duties on
the Hammond B-3. Soon, guitarist Scott Tournet joined, and the bandmembers,
calling themselves Grace Potter & the Nocturnals — thanks to their
late-night practice habits — began to think seriously about making music
their careers. When Burr graduated in 2003, they decided to move back to Vermont
to some land that Potter’s parents owned and dedicate themselves more fully
to their craft, replacing Beard (who chose to stay at school) with Bryan Dondero
in the process.In 2004 they self-released their debut, Original Soul, receiving positive response and comparisons to artists like Norah Jones and early Bonnie Raitt. This in turn garnered major-label offers, but the band preferred to build its fan base by constant touring and festival appearances. Word of their electric performance spread, and shortly after their second album, Nothing But the Water — also self-released — came out in 2005, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals signed to Hollywood Records, with their third full-length, This Is Somewhere, hitting shelves nationwide in August 2007. In 2010, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals was released; Hollywood pulled out all the stops in order to break the band internationally. Over the next year and a half, they toured incessantly, releasing a four-song Christmas EP, a live album in the UK, and a digital download-only set recorded live at the Fillmore. Potter’s duet with Kenny Chesney, “You and Tequila,” was nominated for Single of the Year — Vocal Collaboration at the American Country Awards, and the pair performed it at the CMA awards. In June of 2012, a new studio album, The Lion the Beast the Beat, by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals was released.

Elisabeth Hunstad – 6:30PM
Small stature, huge sound. Fans say
that’s a perfect description of Elisabeth Hunstad. Elisabeth has an
eclectic taste in music and does not like to limit herself, or her listeners, to
any one genre of music. Her list of musical influences extends to everything
that she hears. Her style combines elements of jazz, rock, pop, gospel, Motown,
R&B, Latin, folk, country, art music and contemporary sounds, among others.
Each of these elements is incorporated into her unique style of songwriting,
piano playing and vocals and she delivers it all with the power, precision and,
some would say, the ‘praise style’ of old school soul.

Main Avenue Warehouse – 8:15PM
Tower of Power,
Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Cold Blood, Average White Band, and other great
horn bands. Their high energy, soulful sound driven by a full horn section
features some of the finest talent in the region. Main Avenue Warehouse performs
at festivals and concerts throughout the area. This summer they will be
headlining Automania in downtown Sioux Falls, Yankton’s Riverboat Days, and the
Corvette Classic in Spearfish, SD, as well other regional events.

The New FM – 6:00PM
Started in Brookings, South Dakota the
stylistic chimera The New FM can best be described as a double-helix of indie and
post-punk, both parts leading to a whole that is separate but needing the other
to sound whole. Frenetic cymbal-work and steady beats hold down the floaty guitar
riffs misting like raindrops singing reminiscent tones of Modest Mouse and Two
Door Cinema Club through the trudging fog of the bass and vocals. From song to
song you can get anywhere from a Patrick Stump belted ballad to a tenor Bob Mould
pop jangle. The New FM has been compared to the instrumentation of At the
Drive-In and the dynamics of the Pixies with the lyrics of a teenage Neil
Diamond. Their debut album is still in the works for 2015 but their previous two
EPs are up on most major streaming and download services such as Spotify, iTunes,
and Amazon.

The Unnotables – 7:30PM
The
Unnotables are a collection of their unique styles and varied influences, which
include foundations such as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Jethro Tull,
rock and folk rock artists like Matchbox Twenty, Tonic, and Ryan Adams, as well
as a hint of traditional Eastern European flair brought by two of the bands
international members (both from Bosnia). The Unnotables bring energy and
passion to their music, crafting their sound around strong vocals, catchy guitar
riffs, and overall solid musicianship.

Noah Hoehn – 9:00PM
Singer-songwriter
and multi-instrumentalist, Noah Hoehn, explores the intersection of the blues,
tribal percussion and his classical training. His singular vision to unite the
sounds of new blues and marimba pop is accomplished with an incomparable live
looping system. Saucy harmonica and cool marimba are layered upon a foundation of
dhol drums freeing him to sing and play at the same time–a musical style
unparalleled the world over.

Chris Borchardt – 1:15PM
Saxophonist,
Chris Borchardt has performed extensively throughout the Sioux Falls area in past
years for both private parties and public events. Chris has been a featured
soloist with the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Jazz Camp Band, the Worthington
Community Orchestra and the Augustana Northlander’s Jazz Band. Throughout his
years of playing, Chris has had the opportunity to solo alongside such jazz
artists as: Chris Vadala, Allen Vizutti, Mark Colby, Mike Tomaro, and Matt
Wallace. Chris was a former participant in the SFJB All-City Jazz Ensembles and
was a scholarship winner during high school.Chris performs regularly throughout
the area with his own jazz combo, with DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) and with Brian
Masek and Friends. He also teaches saxophone lessons in Sioux Falls, and is also
a high school band director at Sioux Falls Washington high school.

Steve Raybine Band – 3:00PM
Steve
Raybine is a virtuoso vibraphonist; percussionist; composer/arranger; instructor
and clinician. As the co-founder, co-musical director, and performer/composer of
the critically-acclaimed progressive jazz ensemble AURACLE, he toured the United
States, Europe, and recorded two albums (Glider and City
Slickers) on Chrysalis Records. Raybine performs nationally at colleges
and universities as a jazz artist and as a vibraphone soloist, recitalist and
clinician. Steve Raybine and his band perform his original contemporary jazz
music which incorporates urban funk, rhythm and blues, pop and Latin music
elements.

and poetic lyrics and music. Hank has worked with Red Willow Band, The Shades,
Hank and Christy, DD and the Fayrohs (SD Music Association’s Hall of Fame
inductees, 2011), and the Hegg Brothers’ Holiday Jam. His work with the Adams
Museum Deadwood Songbook included two CDs and a SDPB video nominated for a
Midwest Emmy. He wrote the soundtracks for two SDPB documentaries. He has
produced eight solo recordings of original songs, including World Beat Cowboy,
named “CD of the Year” by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

Work of Wolves – 6:00PM
Work of Wolves is
a five piece rock band from Sioux Falls, SD. Since their formation in June of
2014, the band has released one albums: a five track EP titled Hope & Doubt
(Released August 2014) and is set to release a six track EP titled Is This All We
Are? in July 2015. The members, who come from diverse musical backgrounds,
seamlessly blend elements of rock, pop punk, metal, and R&B into a cascading
wall of sound that has been known to incite both dancing and head-banging. Always
looking to please their fans and leave a lasting impression, you can expect
nothing less than a high-energy performance from Work of Wolves.

El Dub – 7:30PM
El Dub is a One Man,
Reggae, Funk , Hip Hop, Soul band! His high energy, and intricate
“looping” style mixed with positive uplifting lyrics create that
laid back, “no worries”, feel good type of vibe! El Dub is what you
call a “looper” or “One man Band”. He plays all
instruments live in real time, including beat boxing, guitar, bass, keys and
harmonizing vocals and loops them into layers that end up sounding like a full
band with just one man. El Dub is said to be a mix between Zach Deputy and Keller
Williams creating his own intricate looping style mixing Funk, Reggae and jam.

Dino Basic x Philly Fate – 9:15PM
Philly Fate,
Dj8eProof, and Dino Basic are solo hip-hop artists who formed a collective trio
in the later part of 2014. Although all three come from different places; Philly
Fate and Dino Basic being immigrants to America, they would ultimately end up
calling Sioux Falls, SD their home. They are no strangers to the hip-hop scene in
their city either, where you can catch them performing their live sets on regular
occasion. Dj8eProof’s production can be found within many different
projects of the local hip-hop scene and beyond; offering a wide variety of sounds
and styles. Dino Basic has released one official album titled “Thin
Line”; which released in October of 2014, and Philly Fate is set to release
his next record titled “One Life” during summer of 2015.
