The Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society announces two art contests that will bring an eclectic look to JazzFest shirts this year.
One contest will decide the look of the infamous volunteer shirts, worn by over 800 volunteers during the festival. The theme of the design is a quote by the famous jazz pianist, Thelonious Monk:
“Jazz is freedom. You think about that.”
Competing artists must integrate this idea into the three-color design of the shirt.
The second art competition will determine the official JazzFest t-shirt design that includes the festival’s band listing.
The winner of each contest will receive special VIP passes at JazzFest.
Artists are encouraged to work in a variety of mediums with the understanding that their work must be easily converted for screen printing.
Robert Joyce, JazzFest festival chair and executive director of the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society, hopes this competition will give local artists a new creative outlet and opportunity for greater exposure. “Our shirts are always popular and are collected by people all around the country. This exposure for any artists is pretty large considering JazzFest has nearly 90,000 attendees from all around the United States and Canada.”
JazzFest 2009 will be held July 17-18 at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, SD.
